21st Century Literacy
21st century literacy is all about interactivity and immersion. Just reading things in a linear fashion, flipping through pages in a certain order, is outdated . Of course books are still around, but literacy in the 21st century is largely based on the internet. Hypertext is a large part of this as well. Hypertext can be found all throughout this site in the form of links to pages within the sites and links to outside sources. Hypertext is multilinear and does not have to be read in a specific order. This was online navigation is all about. The freedom and interactivity to browse through what you want, when you want.
Another big part of 21 century literacy is the read-write culture. Today's culture is about creativity and creation, not just consumption. We live in a participatory culture. Web 2.0 is the online version of this read-write culture. An example of this phenomenon is this site that I am making. I can not only browse through all of the other sites on the Internet but their are multiple tools, within easy access, for me to create my own. Sites such as YouTube are another great example of this culture. People can make videos about anything they choose too and put them online for the world to see. These videos are certainly widely viewed, as many of them make it to major pop culture icons.
